What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a contract between the employer, the apprentice and the State Training Authority and usually lasts for up to four years. During this period the apprentice learns the skills required to become a qualified tradesperson as well as attending a Registered Training Organisation, either one day a week or on weekly blocks, for the first three years. The fourth year is usually spent full-time at work. Apprentices are paid a wage determined by the relevant industry award and receive a pay increase as they progress through each year of training.
What is a Traineeship?
A traineeship is a combination of paid employment and accredited training. Most traineeships are for a period of 12 months. Traineeships offer the opportunity to progress to higher-level qualifications after the successful completion of the initial certificate. Traineeships may be full-time or part-time. Most ATEL trainees have secured permanent jobs following the successful completion of their traineeship.
What type of training is involved?
Apprentices and trainees receive training that is recognised by both employers and training providers throughout Australia. If you are considering further study you will gain credit for any qualifications you gained during your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Apprentices: Most apprentices attend a TAFE college for up to 13 weeks each year for the first three years of their apprenticeship. The fourth year of an apprenticeship is spent working on the job. Depending on the trade an apprentice may attend TAFE once a week, or on a 'block release' basis, which involves spending periods of up to two weeks at a time at TAFE.
Trainees: All trainees must be enrolled with a registered training provider. Training can be delivered off site at a training institution or at the workplace under the supervision of the employer and a registered training provider. A workplace assessor visits regularly to monitor the trainees progress. a nationally recognised certificate is issued upon successful completion of the traineeship.
What types of industries offer apprenticeships and traineeships?
Traineeships are available to suit almost every industry and business. In fact, any employer who is considering employing a new staff member may be able to employ that person as a trainee. Apprenticeships are available in most industries that have a recognised trade. There are literally hundreds of apprenticeships available across a broad range of industries.
