Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy
The Australian Government has put in place arrangement that give Australian Apprentices access to the fortnightly Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY payments that are delivered by Centrelink. To be eligible for any of these fortnightly payments, you must be an Australian resident and full-time Australian Apprenticeship.
Australian Apprentices can claim only one of these payments. Use the following guide to work out which payment reflects your situation:
- If you're a full time Australian Apprentice aged between 16 and 24, you should apply for Youth Allowance
- If you're a full time Australian Apprentice aged 25 and over, you should apply for Austudy
- If you're a full time Australian Apprentice of any age and you are Indigenous Australian, you should apply for ABSTUDY
Where do I apply?
To claim any one of these payments, you can call 13 36 33, or apply online at http://www.centrelink.gov.au/ and follow the online service links.
Make sure that you have the following personal information handy to help make sure that the application process takes as little time as possible:
- your gross fortnightly earnings
- your bank account number
- your bank branch number and
- your employers Australian Business Number (ABN)
When you make a claim you will need to prove your identify to Centrelink. You will need to provide original documents (not photocopies) from Centrelinks approved list of documents including on it's 'Providing your identity to Centrelink' form.
