Living away from home allowance

Living Away From Home Allowance

The Australian Government realises that sometimes it's hard to find work in your local area and the only way to get a job is if you're willing to move. It can be difficult to move from your family home and establish a new home when you're starting a new job but the Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA) can assist you with accommodation expenses.

What is the Living Away From Home Allowance?

The Living Away From Home Allowance is an allowance paid to eligible Australian Apprentices in the first three years of their training.

How much will I be paid?

An Australian Apprentice eligible to receive the allowance may receive
  • $77.17 a week for up to 12 months
  • $38.59 a week for a further 12 months
  • $25.00 per week for a third 12 months.

Am I eligible?

You may be eligible to receive the allowance if you have to move away from your family or legal guardians home in order to:
  • take up an Australian Apprenticeship or
  • remain in an Australian Apprenticeship position or
  • receive essential supplementary on-the-job training with another employer.
  • You may be eligible to receive the allowance also if you are homeless.
The allowance is not available to Australian Apprentices who:
  • receive Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY or
  • are school students or
  • receive rental or accomodation assistance from Centrelink or their employer or
  • moved away from home three months or more before starting their Australian Apprenticeship
