About ATEL
ATEL is a Not-for-Profit Company owned by its community. Our purpose is to achieve lasting benefits to the communities we serve rather than generate profits. We promote skill development through apprenticeships and traineeships assisting people to achieve sustainable employment and meaningful careers.
Employing more than ninety staff across six full-time offices we offer:
- Group Training service that employs, trains and supports young people in apprenticeships and traineeships.
- An Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AusNAC) providing free support to apprentices, trainees and employers on behalf of the Australian Government.
For more than twenty-six years ATEL has contributed to our community’s economic development by supporting and assisting young people to gain employment and valuable trade skills.
ATEL Corporate History
The Company commenced Group Apprenticeship operations in Albury/Wodonga in 1982. The Company’s founding members were:
- Albury City
- Wodonga City
- Hume Shire
- AWDC
- Murray River County Council
- Uncle Bens, BTR Engineering and Australian Newsprint Mills
These foundation members recognised the need to address emerging skill shortages in trade areas by facilitating increased apprentice employment in our region. The Group Apprenticeship model assisted employers by taking over the legal obligations associated with employment and allowing apprentices to receive training in more than one workplace. This cost effective and flexible option increased apprenticeship-training opportunities in our region.
With the introduction of the Traineeship system this service became known as Group Training. Since 1982 the Company has employed more than 7,000 apprentices & trainees making a major contribution to skill development in NE Victoria and the Riverina.
In 1998 the Federal Government contracted the Company to provide Apprenticeship Support Services. This function involved the administration of Commonwealth Apprentice Subsidies and the promotion of the apprenticeship system to employers and job seekers.
ATEL believed that this service complimented our existing Group Training business and met our key Company objective of increasing apprenticeship employment and ultimately skill development in our community.
In 2004 the Company successfully tendered to provide this service in the Sydney region. We now have a successful business in this major metropolitan market employing more than thirty staff at our AusNAC, North Ryde office.
Since commencing in 1982 the Company has grown to employ more than ninety staff across six offices but remains firmly committed to increasing apprentice and trainee employment for the sole benefit of our community. In keeping with the vision of our founding member companies we seek to increase training opportunities and skill development through the apprenticeship system.
